Setting Up Your Brother MFC-L2750DW: A Step-by-Step Checklist for Office Admins

Office administrator for a 45-person company here. I manage all equipment ordering—roughly $28,000 annually across 6 vendors. When we rolled out Brother MFC-L2750DW units across two floors last year, I learned a few things the hard way. This checklist is what I wish I'd had.

Not ideal for enterprise deployments of 50+ units—that's a different beast requiring print server configuration.

Step 1: Unbox and Verify Contents

Before you start, check the box contents against the packing list. Sounds obvious. I skipped this once—turned out the starter toner cartridge was missing. Took 4 days to resolve with the vendor because I'd already recycled the packaging.

You should have:

• Printer unit
• Starter toner cartridge (TN-730, yields approximately 1,200 pages)
• Drum unit (pre-installed on most units)
• Power cord
• Phone line cord (for fax—you probably won't use this)
• Quick setup guide
• Installation CD (also probably won't use this)

Checkpoint: All items present? Remove all orange packing tape and protective materials inside the printer. There's usually 3-4 pieces of tape holding the drum unit in place.

Step 2: Install the Toner Cartridge

Open the front cover. Pull out the drum unit. Unpack the toner cartridge and shake it side-to-side 5-6 times—this distributes the toner evenly. Push the toner into the drum unit until it clicks.

The surprise wasn't the installation difficulty. It was how many people skip the shaking step and then complain about uneven print quality in the first 50 pages. Turns out that step actually matters.

Checkpoint: Toner clicks firmly into drum. Drum slides back into printer smoothly. Front cover closes completely.

Step 3: Power On and Initial Configuration

Connect power cord. Press the power button. The printer will run through an initialization sequence—takes about 60-90 seconds.

The touchscreen will prompt you for:

• Language selection
• Date and time (important for fax headers and print logs)
• Country/region

Set the date and time accurately. If you're reporting to finance like I am, having correct timestamps on print logs matters when reconciling departmental usage.

Step 4: Connect to WiFi Network

This is where most people hit problems. The "WiFi setup is easy" thinking comes from an era of simpler networks. Today, with enterprise WiFi configurations, guest networks, and MAC filtering, it's more complicated.

On the touchscreen:

1. Navigate to Settings > Network > WLAN > Setup Wizard
2. The printer will scan for available networks
3. Select your network from the list
4. Enter the WiFi password using the touchscreen keyboard (this is somewhat tedious)
5. Wait for connection confirmation

If your office uses WPA2-Enterprise authentication (common in companies over 100 people), you'll need IT to whitelist the printer's MAC address first. Find the MAC address under Settings > Network > WLAN > MAC Address. Write it down before calling IT.

Checkpoint: WiFi icon appears solid (not blinking) on the display. Note the IP address shown—you'll need it.

Step 5: Install Printer Drivers on Computers

Skip the CD. Go to Brother's support site directly—the drivers on the CD are probably outdated anyway.

For Windows:

1. Visit support.brother.com
2. Enter "MFC-L2750DW" in the search
3. Download the "Full Driver & Software Package"
4. Run the installer, select "Wireless Network Connection"
5. The installer should find the printer automatically if it's on the same network

For Mac:

1. Same website, download the Mac version
2. Or use AirPrint—the MFC-L2750DW supports it natively

In my experience, the Windows installer finds the printer about 80% of the time. The other 20%, you'll need to enter the IP address manually. This is why I told you to note it in Step 4.

Step 6: Configure Brother Mobile Printers App

Brother mobile printers functionality requires the "Brother Mobile Connect" app (newer) or "Brother iPrint&Scan" app (older, still works). Both are free on iOS and Android.

After 5 years of managing printer deployments, I'd argue the mobile printing setup is where the real time savings happen. Sales team prints contracts from their phones. Execs print meeting agendas without returning to their desks.

Setup process:

1. Download "Brother Mobile Connect" from your app store
2. Open the app, tap "Add Printer"
3. Ensure your phone is on the same WiFi network as the printer
4. The app should discover the MFC-L2750DW automatically
5. Select it and follow the pairing prompts

For the Brother HL-L2370DW printer (the non-MFC version without scanning), the process is identical. The HL-L2370DW just won't show scan options in the app.

Checkpoint: Print a test page from your phone. Scan a document to your phone (MFC model only).

Step 7: Set Up Scan-to-Email (Optional but Recommended)

This step is one most people skip. They shouldn't.

The MFC-L2750DW can scan documents directly to email addresses without going through a computer. For a 45-person office, this feature alone probably saves our team 3-4 hours weekly in aggregate.

You'll need:

• Your company's SMTP server address
• SMTP port (usually 587 for TLS or 465 for SSL)
• Authentication credentials if required

Configuration via the web interface is easier than the touchscreen:

1. Enter the printer's IP address in a web browser
2. Login (default password is on a sticker on the printer—change this!)
3. Navigate to Administrator > Network > Protocol > POP3/IMAP4/SMTP
4. Enter your SMTP settings
5. Test with the built-in test function

If you ask me, getting IT to provide these SMTP details is often the hardest part. Budget an extra day if you need to file a ticket for this.

Checkpoint: Scan a document and successfully receive it via email.

Step 8: Security and Administrative Settings

Default passwords are a security risk. Period.

In the web interface (same IP address in browser):

1. Change the admin password immediately
2. Consider enabling Secure Function Lock if you need to restrict color printing or limit pages per user
3. Set up an Address Book for frequently used scan destinations
4. Configure sleep timer (I set ours to 5 minutes—balances energy savings with readiness)

Document the new admin password somewhere secure. When I took over purchasing in 2020, I inherited three printers with unknown admin passwords. Factory reset was the only option. Lost all the configuration.

Checkpoint: New admin password set. Test login with new credentials.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Placing the printer on carpet: The MFC-L2750DW has bottom ventilation. Carpet blocks airflow and can cause overheating. Use a hard surface or printer stand.

Ignoring the starter toner warning: The included TN-730 starter cartridge yields roughly 1,200 pages. The standard TN-760 yields about 3,000. If you're deploying for a busy office, order a TN-760 immediately so you're not scrambling when the starter runs out in 2-3 weeks.

Not configuring duplex defaults: The printer defaults to single-sided printing. Go to Settings > General Setup > Ecology > Auto Duplex to enable double-sided printing as default. The $50 difference in annual paper costs translated to noticeably better budget approval from finance.

Forgetting to register for warranty: Brother offers a 1-year standard warranty, extendable with registration. Visit registermybrother.com within 90 days of purchase.
